“Think BIG: An introduction to analyzing big data with Open Source tools.” presented by Daniel Washburn is part presentation, part workshop.  In the presentation, he will talk about concepts and tools used to work with large data sets.  In the workshop portion, Dan provides hands-on instruction for all of the tools he discusses.

Who do you feel would benefit most from your presentation?
I think that this presentation will benefit people who want to understand what can be done with big data sets.

What one concept or viewpoint would you like Notacon participants to walk away with?
I want people to walk away with a basic understanding of large scale data analysis, and a head full of ideas about how they can use it in their lives.

When did you become interested in hacker culture and hacker conferences?
I stumbled upon some of the foundational hacker texts–The Jargon File, the Jolly Roger Anarchist Cookbook, and the like–as a kid exploring the Internet in the late 1990s, and I wanted to know as much and be as smart as the people I read about there. This lead me to become active in my local Linux User Group, and eventually to attend Notacon 1. I’m still friends with many of the people I met back then, and I’ve been to every Notacon since.

What other passions do you have, besides those covered in your presentation?
I’m a self-taught historian, and a passionate student of history. I love to learn the ways that things were done in the past, not only because I find them to be enlightening, but because they provide meaningful context for improvement of present-day issues.

I also like to work with my hands, and I was lucky enough to find an organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historical railroad equipment. Through them, I have the opportunity to work on turn-of-the-century locomotives and passenger cars, as well as to give lectures and presentations and act as a historical interpreter.

What excites you most about Notacon 9?
Notacon 9 excites me because this will be the first year that I will be giving back to the community by presenting a talk.

Any final thoughts or statements you’d like to share with the community.
Tell your friends to come to Notacon 9! There’s something for everyone, and they won’t be disappointed!
