With the Milkymist video synthesizer system, art, technology and open source ideals combine to provide the power of FPGAs to digital artists and experimenters everywhere.  Coming our way from Europe, Sébastien Bourdeauducq and his presentation, “Milkymist: video synthesizers at the cutting edge of open source hardware”, will demonstrate the system, it’s capabilities and usage.  Also, he really really needs a ride to Ypsilanti on the Sunday of Notacon.  If you can lend a hand, contact us!

Who do you feel would benefit most from your presentation?
People who can do things.

What one concept or viewpoint would you like Notacon participants to walk away with?
Hackers of the world should stop playing with little DIY toys, unite, and build crazy shit!

When did you become interested in hacker culture and hacker conferences?
As far as I remember, I have always been interested in science, technology and building stuff. My involvement in hacker culture and conferences started in late 2007 with my first CCC followed shortly by the first activities of the /tmp/lab hackerspace (near Paris). I’ve kept a bittersweet relationship with the hacker community since then.

What other passions do you have, besides those covered in your presentation?
I like about everything, from physics to software, with a hint of sociology and politics. So let me give instead a list of fashionable topics from the hacker community that typically bore me:

  • 50% of computer security
  • Mediocre “3D printers”
  • LED blinkers
  • Breakout boards for proprietary chips
  • Most web applications
  • Most smartphone applications

What excites you most about Notacon 9?
Exploring the fringe of the US hacker scene.
