In order to help you get to know the Notacon 9 presenters better, we asked them all to give more more information about their presentation, who they are, and why they like about Notacon. From now until Notacon, we will focus on a different presenter each day. Today we’re talking with James Arlen, whose presentation title is, “Daily Affirmation With Myrcurial: I’m Good Enough, I’m Smart Enough, and Doggone It, I’m Done With Google!”
Who do you feel would benefit most from your presentation?
Unlike some of my more infosec focused presentations, this one is designed for an average user who is becoming concerned about some of the intrusions into privacy and the “productization” of themselves by corporately controlled interests. If you care at all about ensuring that your information remains under your exclusive control, you should probably attend.
What one concept or viewpoint would you like Notacon participants to walk away with?
The one important viewpoint is that your information is YOURS and you can make changes necessary to ensure that it stays yours.
When did you become interested in hacker culture and hacker conferences?
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. My earliest recollection is probably something like 1982. Hacker conferences, somewhat later, because, well… there weren’t any in 1982.
What other passions do you have, besides those covered in your presentation?
It’s best said in my bio: “Infosec geek, hacker, social activist, author, speaker, and parent.” Frankly, no one has enough time to listen to me talk about everything I’m passionate about. Feel free to grab me in the hallways and ask.
What excites you most about Notacon 9?
Notacon is the con that hugs you. Isn’t that enough?
Any final thoughts or statements you’d like to share with the community.
Be ambitious – it’s all we’ve got. And thanks for making Notacon part of your life.
